History of the Honda Civic Type R and SI

We have a definite soft spot for Honda vehicles here at Fitment Industries, especially the Civic's Si and Type R trims. The bloodlines of these vehicles go really deep, deeper than we had here in America - the first Civic Type R was actually produced in 1997 and reserved exclusively for use in Japan, tearing up streets and tracks alike across the Pacific.

The Si is more familiar to us, as we got the first generation of the model way back in 1984, a little hot hatch that was arguably the start of its lineage. It's crazy to look back and realize the Si (standing for Sport Injected) didn't even have 100 horsepower compared to right now.

10th Generation Honda Civic Type R vs. SI

That's a little history lesson, but for the sake of simplicity and access to these cars, we'd like to focus today's discussion on the 10th generation of Civics, which is readily available for sale. Those of you wondering if the older Type R is worth it over an SI, here's a hot take - the Type R from previous generations is 100% worth it. Importing one comes into play, and you'll pay a hefty price for one, but these cars will absolutely hold their value and most likely appreciate in value if you keep them nice.

What about the 10th generation, though? Let's dive into what the SI is and what the Type R is.

Performance Features and Design of the 10th Generation Honda Civic Si

Let's start with the SI first - you can get it in either a four-door or two-door configuration, and either option has some more aggressive bodywork compared to the normal Civic. The front bumper also looks really good and sporty on the SI.

Engine-wise, the SI gives you a 1.5-liter four-cylinder with a turbo that pumps out 205 horsepower in stock form. You're also rolling your own gears in this car, as it comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission, as it should. Within that drivetrain, you'll also get a limited-slip differential, which is necessary on a front-wheel-drive car to help with overall handling when putting power down. Torque steer is fun, but it isn't something you want to have when focusing on performance.

The SI also gets some sportier suspension, a bit more rigid set of sway bars, and larger front brakes - overall, you definitely get enough from the factory to warrant a sportier trim level and SI badge versus a generic everyday Civic.

Let's go deeper and see what's so special about the Type R. The only body option here is a five-door hatchback that features way more aggressive bodywork than a basic Civic or SI. The crazy arrow is also functional, though, and gives you some true downforce for some performance applications. Engine-wise, you also get a 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that puts out 310 horsepower - that's 105 horsepower more than the SI if you're taking notes.

You'll also get a six-speed manual transmission with the Type R, with a limited-slip differential and all the goodies from the SI, just done a little bit better.

How Much Do The 10th Gen Honda Civic SI and Type R Cost?

Now let's make things a little more interesting and figure out how much either of these cars cost - keep in mind that we're talking 2022 numbers here, but they should be directionally accurate.

We went and found 10 used Honda Civic SI's and 10 used Civic Type R's to do a little comparison for pricing, picking similar model years when possible. On average, the Civic Type R's for sale were about a half year newer than the SI's available for sale, and the Type R's had about 11,000 fewer miles than their SI counterparts. In terms of price, the Type R was about $13,000 more than a comparable SI.

So, what does that all mean? The Type R is about $13,000 more expensive than the SI on the used car market with 11,000 fewer miles. That's a lot of money, but is it enough to justify a purchase of a Type R over an SI?

Is the Honda Civic Type R Worth It For The Money?

In our opinion, absolutely, for a few reasons. The Type R appears to hold its value much better than an equivalent SI, and in the long run, if the old Type R's are any indication of future value, your money should be pretty safe if you own one. For that money, you're getting a much different Civic than the normal everyday one, even compared to the SI - you're seriously just getting a lot of car performance here.

The Type R is a top performer right out of the box and really punches above its weight class, even at the price point that it lives at. Still, both the 10th generation SI and Type R are great choices, and you can't really go wrong with either. If you've got the extra cash, though, go for a Type R - you won't be disappointed.
