Best New Cars of 2022
We've actually been gifted quite a few surprises when it comes to the automotive world in 2022, and even though we might have fallen on opposite sides of the fence on some of the car announcements, there have still been some significant wins this year, and for the first time in a long time we have some new platforms coming out that we can look forward to and actually have some potential.
It really starts to beg the question, at least in our minds, of which one is going to come out on top in the next few years as these things start to hit the market, and of course start to get some modifications thrown at them. So, today, we'll take you through the top new cars that are set to be released in 2022, as well as the top specs and features of each. Let's dive right into it.
New Features of the Upcoming Subaru WRX
So at the beginning of the year we were introduced to the newest evolution of the Subaru WRX, and as we all know, the launch didn't go so well - the plastic cladding, the square fender arches, the Honda Civic tail lights, they didn't really sit well with a lot of people who were looking forward to the WRX's next generation. Plus, there's the fact that Subaru announced that there will be no STI trim for the WRX, but you know, that's a story for another time.
However, we don't think that gives us the right to give up on the WRX quite yet. There are still some pretty impressive things about this car, and it gives it a nice leg up on the previous generation with a revamped 2.4-liter engine, pushing out 271 horsepower out of the box. It shouldn't be something that gets glossed over, and even though some exterior and interior decisions left some not-so-great impressions, companies like Aeroflow Dynamics have taken one for the team here and have already started working on some replacement parts and pieces to make this thing look a bit better. And honestly, they've done a really good job so far.
New Features of the Next-Gen Toyota GR86
Speaking of boxer engines, it's only right to throw the GR86 into the mix as well. We saw the newest BRZ hit the market before the Toyota variant was released, simply because Toyota was like "You know what? It's just not ready yet. We want to make it better." and honestly, we can appreciate that.
When the news broke of the next generation of GR86 cars coming out, we were kind of nervous - however, Toyota has done an incredible job, and everyone we've talked to who has driven or picked up one of these things has said the same thing. They love the car, and it's a great next evolution of what the GR86 is supposed to be. Though the rumors of a turbocharger or forced induction engine never came to fruition, it did help the car become what it was always meant to be - an affordable rear-wheel drive sports coupe.
Toyota took everything that made the first GR86 generation so good and took it a bit further, with some upgraded interior styling, new design cues on the exterior, and a 2.4-liter engine that got rid of some nasty torque dip that the previous engine had. It's a proper sequel to the first GR86 cars that came out.
New Features of the Upcoming Toyota GR Corolla
Next up on the list we've got the Toyota GR Corolla, coming new for its next generation with a three-cylinder - that's right - engine. This turbocharged all-wheel drive hatch can create up to 300 horsepower, and really, there isn't much to knock on the car otherwise. We've all been saying year after year that Toyota needs to do something with the Corolla Hatchback, how it looks too good to be that slow, and they did. So, thank you for listening, Toyota.
The only real downside for the new GR Corolla is that there might not be a ton of aftermarket support available right away - with a brand new engine and brand new drivetrain, it'll take a little bit for the wide variety of parts to hit the market. That's not even mentioning what could potentially happen to these things when you do add power to them, but they do seem incredibly fun right out of the box, and we think it's gonna be one of the top contenders for the best new cars of 2022.
New Features of the Upcoming Nissan Z
So we're talking a lot about Toyota, and we talked a lot about Subaru, so let's take a break from that and talk about Nissan for a second. Of course, we're gonna throw the new Nissan Z in there- now, this is one of those cars that has been teased again and again, and renders have been thrown out left and right of what it could be, but finally, we have confirmation of what the car actually is and what it actually looks like.
Now, we feel like this is another one that kind of split the community a little bit. Some people aren't a huge fan of the front end - the grille and headlights specifically - but we think they absolutely killed it with this car. It's a perfect blank canvas with a lot of potential for whatever style you want to go with. That's all backed up with a strong power plant and a manual transmission, which really sets the car up for success.
One of the main buzzes around these cars is how affordable they will be, but unfortunately, we think it kinda missed the market a little bit, or at least we're being a little weird about how it all went with the different trim levels that the new Z offers. You could get one of these for around $40,000, but the one you want is probably gonna be closer to $50,000, which may or may not be worth it depending on what you're looking for.
New Features of the Upcoming Honda Civic Type R
There's one more car on our list that just recently got unveiled, and of course, that's the all-new Civic Type R. We just did a video on it a few weeks back where Sam and Dakota got their thoughts on it, and we're not gonna lie here, the introduction of the newest Civic and Integra wasn't the most exciting announcement. However, the Type R makes up for all of that - it's like the previous generation of the Type R had its 30th birthday, went through a bit of a quarter life crisis, and came out a better person.
Now, we're not saying that we didn't enjoy the last Type R, but we really like the new one. It's almost a little bit of a polar opposite; where the last one was so aggressive and came with a ton of factory arrows and left not a whole lot to change up, this new Type R has much more opportunities to make your own, a bit more of a blank canvas like the new Nissan Z. However, we do feel that this car is going to fall into a bit of the same fate of the previous one, where dealers go absolutely insane with the prices on these things and hold them hostage to get as much money as they can.
