What are Coilovers?
Coilovers are designed for two primary reasons — to improve handling and adjust (lower) ride height. Coilovers are simply a spring/coil that's placed over a shock absorber. The shock absorber is where most of the magic happens— this is where damping comes into play. Some coilovers are made with damping adjustments (compression and rebound) that change how stiff they are when driving. Most coilovers also have ride height adjustments, giving you the freedom to lower your car to achieve the perfect lowered look. Lowering your car will also improve handling and reduce body roll too. Learn more about coilovers on our blog page!
Coilovers vs. Springs
So, what's the difference between coilovers and lowering springs? Lowering springs are only designed to lower your car, whereas coilovers offer more ride height adjustments, damping adjustments, and even camber adjustments.* Remember, a lowered car = lower center of gravity = less body roll = better overall handling. But, lowering springs don't improve handling nearly as well as coilovers do. Lowering springs offer a budget-friendly option for better performance over stock, but coilovers are the ultimate upgrade!
*Not all coilovers are made with adjustable ride height, damping controls, and camber plates. How Much do Coilovers Cost?
Coilovers don't have to be expensive. Brands like Tein, BC Racing, and Fortune Auto offer super affordable, entry-level coilovers with all your ride height and damping adjustments, starting between $600 and $1,000. Bumping up to intermediate coilovers, expect to spend between $1000 and $1,500. If you want to get the best coilovers on the market with options like external reservoirs, independent compression and rebound adjustments, and high and low-speed adjustments, expect to spend upwards of $2K to $3K+. No matter what budget you're working with, coilovers are one of the best all-around performance mods you can buy!
Are Coilovers Worth It?
If you're looking to massively improve your car's handling performance on the street and track, coilovers are 110% worth it. Plus, you can adjust coilovers to be comfortable on long road trips and stiffen them up for the autocross track in about...5 seconds. What's not to love?
Coilover Brands
With tons of options out there, coilovers offer the widest range of adjustments without killing your bank account. Brands like BC Racing, Fortune Auto, Tein, Silvers, Megan Racing, D2, and more, offer hundreds of different style coilovers for whatever application you're looking for. Get your ride set up right with a set of coilovers available right here from Fitment Industries!
