July 11, 2022

If you've got a high-performance car in your driveway that you want to get even more power out of, but you don't have much experience making engine mods and want something easy you can do, what are your options? They're admittedly limited, but you can't go wrong with a good cold air intake.

Cold air intakes are some of the most common aftermarket performance mods that enthusiasts make to their cars, and they're also one of the easiest to install. So, let's install one - we'll take you through a step-by-step process today so you know exactly what you're doing when you get your intake installed in your engine. Let's get started!

Parts and Materials Needed to Install a Cold Air Intake

You don't need a whole lot to get an intake installed, and most of the parts required will be things you probably already have. Before you get your intake out of the box and start the installation process, make sure you have the following items:

  • Flathead & Phillips screwdrivers
  • Allen or Hex Wrench Set
  • Pliers
  • Sockets
  • Ratchet wrench

There are plenty of moving parts that you'll need to keep an eye on whenever you work on an engine, so you'll also want to make sure that wherever you're working, there's plenty of light. If you're in your garage, a good shop light should do the trick.

Step By Step Process For Installing a Cold Air Intake System

Now that you've got all the parts needed to install your cold air intake, let's get it into your engine! The step-by-step process for doing so is below:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal from your car - not only is this done for cautionary purposes, but disconnecting a battery resets the PCM to your engine, allowing it to learn the new air to fuel ratio that your cold air intake will generate.
  2. Unscrew the hose clamp from the factory air tube and slip it off the throttle body. Remove the rest of the factory intake system as well.
  3. Attach the new intake's silicone coupling to the throttle body on your engine.
  4. Tighten the hose clamp at the end of the coupling to secure it in place.
  5. Put another hose clamp on the front of the coupling - don't tighten it yet, though. That'll come later.
  6. The intake tube should slide right into the silicone coupling - you just need to make sure that it's running from the throttle bay away from where the engine bay is.
  7. Tighten up the silicone coupling and make sure all other brackets on the tube are secured.
  8. Your new intake system will come with a mass air flow sensor. Plug it in.
  9. Reconnect your battery's negative terminal so it has the chance to reset and read the new system.

That's it! You're good to go, and you should start to see some performance boosts immediately. However, keep in mind that these steps may vary depending on the kind of car you drive, and if you need to install an airbox to go with your intake, some additional installation time will also be needed.
